What We Do
Books for Schools
Kiwimbi’s Mobile Library service takes books to 90 schools by boda-boda. Our staff and volunteers visit these schools to promote reading and literacy. Since the program began we have provided books to over 500,000 students, currently serving 50,000.
Teaching Assistants for Primary Schools
Kiwimbi assists three public schools in order to reduce class size for effective teaching of reading and basic mathematics. We provide teaching assistants at no cost to the schools. There are currently 500 students supported by Kiwimbi teaching assistants and there have been over 5,000 students since we began.
Nutrition for Children
We provide a nutritious daily lunch to over 200 students in examination classes in three public schools. This daily meal keeps the children in school throughout the entire day.
Exam Preparation for Primary School Children
Kiwimbi’s staff and teaching assistants provide intensive tutoring, mentoring and exam preparation daily to 200+ students at the three primary schools were we work. Over 2,400 students have participated in this exam preparation support program. Currently, there are 218 students.
Sustainable Farming for Families with Children
The agronomy program trains farmers on organic farming techniques and on the use of indigenous seeds for vegetables & beans. This includes a focus on drought resistant crops such as cassava, millet, sorghum, and other vegetables. Instruction includes the basics of proper nutrition and a balanced diet. Currently there are 212 families recieving farming instruction and over 2,000 have participated since the program began.
Tailoring Skills and Business
The robust tailoring program at Kiwimbi equips women with skills in tailoring and in running a business. The course has prepared over 80 women for the national vocational exams in tailoring so far, with 39 currently enrolled. We have a strong practical component to the program which gives our students a big advantage in learning the necessary skills. Every student who has sat for the national exam has passed.
Carpentry Skills and Business
The carpentry program equips young men with skills in carpentry and business through projects that enhance the facilities of the Kiwimbi Library. These include building shelves, tables, specially designed chairs and more. Through this work, the 10 students currently enrolled prepare for internal assessments by an international carpenter. The students are also given instruction in reading and basic math. In all, 21 students have completed our program.
Fine Arts and Painting
One of the main goals of our this program is to expose children to fine arts and painting. Over 1,000 students have practiced and developed skills that include still life and portrait drawing, shading, water painting, clay work and more. Students also work through the process of making natural pigments from natural materials like flower blossoms and colored clay. In addition to bringing beginning art experiences to children, our program provides extensive training to talented local artists. There are over 200 children in the art program now.
Satellite Libraries
In addition to our main Library and Community Learning Center, Kiwimbi has established and provided books for seven satellite libraries. Through these extensions of our main facility, we are able to bring books to places too far from Amagoro for individuals to take advantage of the opportunity to read books and improve their literacy skills. These satellite libraries promote a culture of reading and numeracy throughout the wider area.
Computers and Digital Skills
The goal of our computer and digital skills program is to teach children the important basics of how to use computers. There is also the opportunity to explore a variety of software applications and participate in robotics. Over 100 students have learned computer skills not including the 30 currently in the program.
